As the new year begins, many of us are looking for simple yet impactful ways to make a positive change in our daily lives. One area where we can make a significant difference is in our approach to food storage. Embracing sustainable practices not only reduces our environmental footprint but also promotes a healthier planet for future generations. In this blog post, we'll explore the use of beeswax wraps and bags as eco-friendly alternatives for food storage, offering you a small but meaningful step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
Beeswax Wraps: A Natural and Reusable Solution
Beeswax wraps have gained popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap. Made from cotton fabric coated with a mixture of beeswax, tree resin, and jojoba oil, these wraps provide a natural and reusable way to keep your food fresh. Here are some steps to incorporate beeswax wraps into your January food storage routine:
Wrap Fresh Produce: Use beeswax wraps to cover fresh fruits and vegetables. The wraps create a breathable barrier that helps maintain the produce's freshness while reducing the need for single-use plastic bags.
Cover Leftovers: Instead of reaching for plastic wrap or aluminum foil, cover your leftovers with beeswax wraps. The wraps can be molded to fit various container shapes, providing a secure seal.
Wrap Sandwiches and Snacks: When packing lunches or snacks, opt for beeswax wraps instead of disposable plastic bags. The wraps are easy to clean and can be reused for months with proper care.
Beeswax Bags: A Convenient Alternative
In addition to wraps, beeswax bags offer a convenient and sustainable option for on-the-go food storage. These bags are typically made from organic cotton infused with beeswax, creating a water-resistant and breathable surface. Here's how you can integrate beeswax bags into your January routine:
Lunch on the Go: Replace single-use plastic bags with beeswax bags when packing your lunch. These bags are durable and can be easily cleaned, making them a practical and sustainable choice for daily use.
Snack Storage: Use beeswax bags to store snacks like nuts, dried fruits, or crackers. The bags are versatile and can be folded or shaped to accommodate various snack sizes.
Freezer-Friendly: Beeswax bags are suitable for freezing food items. Whether you're storing homemade broths, soups, or fruits, these bags provide a sustainable alternative to disposable plastic freezer bags.
Making small, sustainable changes to our daily habits can collectively contribute to a greener and healthier planet. By incorporating beeswax wraps and bags into your January food storage routine, you're not only reducing your reliance on single-use plastics but also embracing a more eco-friendly lifestyle. These small steps may seem minor, but their cumulative impact can lead to a positive change for the environment and future generations. So, as you embark on the new year, consider these simple adjustments for a more sustainable approach to food storage.

Thanksgiving is a time for gathering with loved ones, expressing gratitude, and indulging in a bountiful feast. It's a wonderful occasion to celebrate the harvest season and reflect on the things that matter most. However, as we gather to give thanks, it's also essential to consider the environmental impact of our celebrations. This year, let's make Thanksgiving a little greener by embracing sustainability in our traditions and choices.
1. Mindful Menu Planning:
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Thanksgiving is the delicious spread of food. To make it more sustainable, consider planning a menu that incorporates locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Supporting local farmers not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation but also promotes the use of fresh, in-season produce.
2. Reduce Food Waste:
Thanksgiving often leads to large amounts of food waste. To combat this, plan your portions carefully, and consider donating excess food to local charities or shelters. Composting food scraps is another eco-friendly option that can reduce the amount of organic waste ending up in landfills.
3. Eco-Friendly Decorations:
Instead of buying disposable decorations, opt for reusable or natural alternatives. Decorate with items like potted plants, gourds, and pinecones that can be composted or reused for years to come. You can also involve your family in crafting homemade decorations from recycled materials.
4. Conscious Table Settings:
Set your Thanksgiving table with reusable plates, utensils, and cloth napkins rather than disposable options. If you prefer disposable tableware for convenience, consider choosing biodegradable or compostable alternatives that won't linger in landfills.
5. Energy Efficiency:
Thanksgiving often involves a lot of cooking and baking. To minimize energy consumption, use energy-efficient appliances and cook multiple dishes in the oven at once. If you have the option, consider cooking some dishes on the stovetop or using a slow cooker, which can be more energy-efficient.
6. Give Thanks for Nature:
Take a moment during your Thanksgiving celebration to appreciate the beauty of nature. Consider going for a post-meal nature walk or organizing an outdoor activity that allows everyone to connect with the environment and appreciate the outdoors.
7. Sustainable Shopping:
If you plan to do some Black Friday shopping after Thanksgiving, think about supporting sustainable and eco-conscious brands. Look for products made from recycled materials or companies that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint.
8. Share the Message:
Finally, use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to share your commitment to sustainability with friends and family. Engage in meaningful conversations about the importance of eco-conscious choices and inspire others to join you in making Thanksgiving and everyday life more sustainable.
By incorporating these simple yet impactful changes, you can have a Thanksgiving celebration that's not only filled with gratitude and delicious food but also in harmony with the environment. This year, let's give thanks to Mother Earth by celebrating a sustainable Thanksgiving.

BeeBAGZ is a great way to teach your child about reducing single-use plastic. It’s a simple change in their life that teaches them to use eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Other single-use plastic alternatives are reusable water bottles, reusable shopping or grocery bags, and reusable food storage containers. Single-use plastic items are used for only minutes before laying waste to our planet for years. By teaching our kids about the harm of single-use plastic when they’re young, it’ll help prevent their plastic waste for years.
Food Waste
Food waste is a massive issue for the planet. One-third of the food we produce ends up becoming food waste (Newsome and Van Eeden 2017). That food waste ends up in landfills, wastes the resources used to produce the food, adds to the greenhouse gas issue, furthers soil degradation, and overall, the consequences of food waste contribute to climate change. But, most people aren’t aware of just how dastardly food waste is for the planet. That’s why we have to start teaching our children. Now I’m not saying we have to hold lectures or berate them for wasting food, but instead inform them. Instill the idea that food waste is bad from a young age, and they will never want to waste food again for their whole life.
Regardless, kids will waste food in their lunches; it happens, but what’s important is that we don’t throw it away unless absolutely necessary. Thankfully, I used BeeBAGZ in my kids’ lunches, so their food would stay fresh longer. I would simply check the uneaten food and then I would put it in my fridge so I could pack it again for lunch the next day. This simple action saved my household so much food waste. BeeBAGZ is naturally antibacterial and is made from breathable materials, so it keeps food fresh for longer while preventing food waste! It’s those small changes in attitude and daily habits that will make a massive impact.
Sustainability Starts Young!
As you guide your kids through life's lessons, don't forget to include the environment. It’ll make it easy for them to continue making environmentally conscious choices if they start from a young age. It will teach them to spread their eco-friendly lifestyle through future generations, preventing generations of waste, and creating a ripple effect of eco-friendly choices.

In a world driven by convenience and mass production, it's important to pause and reflect on the impact our choices have on the environment and our local communities. One powerful way to contribute to sustainability efforts is by planting a garden and supporting local food producers. Not only does this allow us to enjoy the freshest and most nutritious produce, but it also helps foster a sense of connection to the natural world and our community. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of planting a garden and buying from local food producers, as well as provide some practical tips to get started.
There's something magical about planting a tiny seed, nurturing it, and watching it grow into a bountiful plant. By cultivating a garden, we become active participants in the food production process, reducing our reliance on industrial agriculture and its associated environmental impacts. Here are some key benefits of planting a garden:
a. Fresh and Nutritious Produce: When we grow our own food, we have complete control over the cultivation practices. By using organic methods, we can ensure that our fruits, vegetables, and herbs are free from harmful chemicals, making them healthier and more flavourful.
b. Connection with Nature: Gardening provides a profound connection with the natural world. As we tend to our plants, we learn to appreciate the cycles of life, the importance of water, and the delicate balance of ecosystems. This connection fosters a deeper respect for the environment and encourages sustainable practices.
c. Cost Savings: Planting a garden can help reduce grocery bills, especially during the harvest season. Growing your own food eliminates the need to purchase produce, and even a small garden can provide a significant portion of your fresh produce needs.
While cultivating a garden at home is a wonderful step towards sustainability, it may not meet all our food requirements. That's where local food producers come into play. Here's why supporting them is crucial:
a. Reducing Food Miles: Buying from local food producers decreases the distance food has to travel from farm to plate. This significantly reduces carbon emissions associated with transportation and helps combat climate change. By supporting local producers, we contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system.
b. Preserving Biodiversity: Many local farmers and food producers prioritize heirloom and indigenous varieties, preserving biodiversity and protecting our agricultural heritage. By purchasing from them, we help ensure the continuation of these unique and diverse crops for future generations.
c. Strengthening the Local Economy: When we support local food producers, we invest in our community's economy. Our purchases help sustain local farms and businesses, creating jobs and fostering a vibrant and resilient local food system.
a. Start Small: If you're new to gardening, begin with a small plot or even container gardening. This allows you to gain experience and gradually expand your garden as you feel more comfortable.
b. Research and Plan: Learn about the types of plants that grow well in your climate and soil conditions. Consider your family's preferences and the space available. Proper planning will maximize your garden's potential and reduce waste.
c. Visit Farmers' Markets: Farmers' markets are great places to connect with local food producers. Take the time to talk to farmers, ask questions about their growing practices, and support them by purchasing their fresh produce.
d. Join a Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program: CSA programs offer a direct relationship between consumers and local farmers. By becoming a member, you receive a share of the farm's produce throughout the growing season, supporting the farmer and enjoying a diverse selection of fresh food.
Planting a garden and buying from local food producers are powerful ways to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier, more connected community. By taking an active role in growing our own food and supporting local farmers, we reduce our environmental footprint, enjoy fresher and more nutritious produce, and help build a resilient local food system. Let's make conscious choices that prioritize the well-being of our planet and the people who inhabit it.
]]>"World Turtle Day: A Call to Protect and Celebrate Nature's Shelled Wonders"
Welcome to World Turtle Day, a global celebration dedicated to these remarkable creatures and their conservation. Turtles, with their ancient wisdom and gentle demeanor, hold a special place in our hearts and the natural world. On this day, we unite in our commitment to protect and celebrate these shelled wonders.
Turtles have graced our planet for millions of years, surviving through countless changes and challenges. They have become symbols of longevity, resilience, and wisdom across cultures. As we gather to honor them on this special day, let us reflect on the critical role they play in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems.
However, turtles now face unprecedented threats that jeopardize their survival. Habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and the illegal wildlife trade are pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Our actions, both individually and collectively, can make a difference in their future.
As stewards of the Earth, it is our duty to protect and preserve the habitats that turtles call home. Wetlands, coastal regions, and nesting sites are vital to their survival and the overall health of our planet. By supporting conservation initiatives, promoting sustainable practices, and advocating for strong environmental policies, we can create a brighter future for turtles and all living beings.
World Turtle Day also serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all species. Turtles, as keystone species, have a profound impact on their ecosystems. By protecting turtles, we indirectly safeguard other marine and terrestrial life forms that rely on these ecosystems for survival.
Today, let us engage in meaningful actions to celebrate and protect turtles. Participate in beach clean-ups, educate others about the threats they face, and support organizations working tirelessly to conserve these magnificent creatures. Together, we can make a positive impact and ensure a world where turtles thrive for generations to come.
On this World Turtle Day, let us embrace the spirit of compassion, conservation, and coexistence. May we be inspired to cherish our natural world, its diverse inhabitants, and the delicate balance that sustains us all.
Join the global movement and be a voice for turtles. Together, we can create a future where these ancient mariners continue to grace our planet's waters and inspire generations with their enduring beauty.
Happy World Turtle Day!
]]>World Turtle Day, celebrated annually on May 23rd, is a special occasion that highlights the importance of turtles in our ecosystems and raises awareness about the threats they face. These remarkable reptiles have captivated human hearts for centuries with their ancient charm and gentle nature. On this World Turtle Day, let's delve into the significance of these magnificent creatures and explore how we can protect and conserve them and their precious habitats.
The Remarkable Diversity of Turtles: Turtles come in various shapes, sizes, and species, each with its unique characteristics and habitats. From the mighty Snapping Turtles to the beautifully patterned Painted Turtles, and the rare and elusive Leatherback Turtles, the world of turtles is diverse and awe-inspiring. Understanding the different species and their roles in ecosystems is crucial to appreciating their importance and ensuring their survival.
The Plight of Turtles: Turtles face numerous threats, making them one of the most endangered groups of animals on Earth. Habitat loss, pollution, climate change, illegal trade, and bycatch in fishing operations all contribute to their decline. The loss of nesting beaches and pollution of marine environments pose grave challenges to their survival. By raising awareness about these threats, we can work together to implement effective conservation strategies.
Protecting Turtle Habitats: Preserving and restoring the habitats of turtles is vital for their survival. Wetlands, nesting sites, and coastal regions must be safeguarded from destruction and pollution. Efforts such as beach clean-ups, restoration projects, and the establishment of protected areas contribute to creating safe havens for turtles and other wildlife. Supporting conservation organizations working on habitat protection initiatives can have a lasting impact.
Combatting Plastic Pollution: Plastic pollution poses a severe threat to turtles and other marine life. Turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, a staple in their diet, leading to ingestion and potential harm. By reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, recycling, and advocating for responsible waste management, we can significantly reduce the plastic that ends up in our oceans. Every individual action counts in the fight against plastic pollution.
Spreading Awareness and Education: World Turtle Day provides an excellent opportunity to educate and engage others in the protection of turtles. Organize awareness campaigns, participate in community events, and use social media platforms to share educational resources, inspiring stories, and captivating visuals. Encouraging others to join the movement and become advocates for turtle conservation can make a significant difference.
World Turtle Day serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect these extraordinary creatures and their habitats. By raising awareness, supporting conservation efforts, and taking individual actions, we can create a better future for turtles. Let's celebrate World Turtle Day not just on a single day but every day by championing their cause and working collectively to ensure a world where turtles thrive alongside us.
So, this World Turtle Day, let's embrace the wonder of turtles, honour their resilience, and pledge to be their guardians. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for these beloved shelled friends.

Not only is food waste tough on the wallet, but also on the environment. Food that is produced but not eaten ends up in landfills and creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is a significant contributor to climate change. When food is wasted, all the resources used to produce it are also wasted.

For many households, the concept of utilizing anything other than Ziploc bags or cling wrap for food storage is still a relatively new concept. As more sustainable alternatives are introduced into the market however, there are endless opportunities to challenge ourselves and introduce new habits into our lifestyles.
One such means of reducing plastic into our daily routines, while minimizing our ecological footprint on the environment, is the use of beeswax wrap products. Whether as a food wrap or a food storage bag, these reusable, all-natural products are a proven means of keeping food fresher, while keeping single use plastics out of our landfills and waterways.
Keeping Fruits & Veggies FreshTired of throwing out your soggy and wilted leafy greens? Reduce food waste and keep your spinach, kale, lettuce, herbs and other produce and fruits fresh by storing them in BeeBAGZ® food storage bags. Naturally breathable and proven to protect and preserve the life of your food.
Storing Leftovers in the Fridge
Beeswax wraps and bags are an ideal way to ditch plastic wrap and Ziploc bags. Simply insert food into bags, fold over top and seal with the warmth of your hands. The wraps are just as easy...mold them over bowls or jars and keep your food tightly sealed. No need to choke the life out of your food with single use plastics.
Lunches & Snacks On The Go
Beeswax wraps and food bags are just as functional when on the go. Pack sandwiches, wraps, cut fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, nuts and other snacks when heading to work or out on your weekend cycle or hike. Safe for you and the environment!

Repurpose old beeswax bags or wraps by cutting them into strips or rolling them into balls for great fire starters.
Storing Open Pet Food Cans
Silicone and plastic can covers are limited to specific sizes of cans and are harmful to our environment when disposed of. BeeLIDZ™ are a more functional and sustainable option as they are reusable, adaptable to any sized can, able to be repurposed or harmlessly biodegraded at the end of their functional life. Cover and seal with the warmth of your hands...that easy! |
Happy Mothers day to all the incredible mothers, including Mother Earth herself. As we acknowledge and celebrate mothers on May 8th, let’s also celebrate & be reminded of the greatest mother of all, Mother Earth and all that she provides us. Let's show "mom" and Mother Earth lots of love by shopping for gifts that are sustainable, eco-friendly and that promote a healthier eco-system. Before making that purchase for mom, consider the social and environmental sustainability associated with that store, that company or that "special" gift. Is it likely end up in a landfill producing methane gases for hundreds of years? Has it been produced by child labour? Does that company pay living wages? No doubt these are all hard measures to understand when looking at a product in store or online but some simple research in advance can point you towards companies, brands and products/services that adhere to strict social and environmental standards. One way of doing so is looking for companies that are B Corp certified. Companies with this designation have been vetted based on their demonstrated ability to provide a positive impact to their employees, the environment and the world as a whole, through the act of doing business.

Plastic toothbrushes are a major culprit when it comes to creating waste on our planet. Did you know that plastic, even if recycled, can never be fully eliminated and often ends up pulling our oceans? By switching over to bamboo alternatives, you'll be able to ensure that you're minimizing the waste created as a result of your daily habits. There are endless zero-waste options on the market, and we can't wait for you to try them!
Not only are natural products evidently better for the environment, most of the time, they're also more beneficial for your skin! Being free of harmful chemicals that pollute the planet and your body with toxins, natural skincare provides you with a sustainable solution that prioritize your health and the environment's. Keep packaging in mind, too, and select options that incorporate biodegradable products into their packaging. You'll feel great, and our planet will thank you!
Selecting decor that speaks to you and your personal style is important, but so prioritizing sustainability in the process. When purchasing new bedding, make sure to read the list of materials used and inform yourself on the production of each product. Keeping sustainability in mind while shopping will make all the difference.
]]>It’s no secret that the cleaning products that we purchase from big-box brands are often filled with harmful chemicals that hold detrimental effects not only on our health but on the health of the environment — and let’s not forget the plastic packaging they are typically stored in. In recent years, many of us have discovered how easy and beneficial it is to make our own cleaning products at home, allowing for a non-toxic alternative. To learn more about how to incorporate this simple habit into your home, click here.
2. Unplug your electronics.
Did you know that simply switching your electronics ‘off’ doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re not passively using energy? By being plugged into an outlet, most electronics still make use of the current and end up consuming power for no season. It’s a quick fix though — by unplugging our electronics when we’re not using them, we’re able to ensure that no electricity is wasted, thus reducing our ecological footprint on the environment.
3. Learn your local waste disposal guidelines.
Every community is different, as are its rules with recycling. Ensure that you’re informed and up-to-date on your local guidelines, so that you can best dispose of waste. Many communities have now also incorporated compost disposal, which is always a great option. To ensure that you are doing your part, do your research and try your best to discover which methods allow you to responsibly dispose of waste while keeping our planet front of mind.
4. Conserve on water consumption.
You might be surprised by the amount of water that the average person makes use of on a daily basis: from cooking, to bathing, and everything in between, it definitely adds up. So, it’s important to be mindful and to minimize our consumption of water wherever we can: turn the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth, minimize your time showering, and think of ways that you can make small amounts of water last longer. By becoming water-wise, you’ll benefit the environment in more ways than you’d think.

1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and several grinds of fresh pepper and sauté until soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Then add the squash and cook until it begins to soften, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes.
2. Add the garlic, sage, rosemary, and ginger. Stir and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant, then add 3 cups of the broth. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.
3. Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, and blend until smooth. If your soup is too thick, add up to 1 cup more broth and blend. Season to taste and serve with parsley, pepitas, and crusty bread.

Leftover food is a waste issue when lesser developed nations struggle with starvation. Leftover food waste is also a major environmental issue, contributing plastics to landfills.
Thankfully, innovative and earth-friendly products like beeswax wrap bags are becoming increasingly popular and can help you cut back on spoiled food and plastic kitchen waste. And there are other sustainable plastic-free options out there that can help to up your game!
Non-toxic, durable, and easy to clean, we love Dalcini stainless steel containers. Launched in 2015, Nina Tandon filled a gap in the plastic-free food container industry, replacing toxic BPA plastics with safe stainless steel. We like that Dalcini is a Canadian company—and that the containers hold soups, stews, and salad dressings without the worry of hormone-disrupting chemicals leaching into food.
Made in Montreal, we’re big fans of Credo mesh bags for properly storing onions and potatoes so they don’t go soft too soon. We also like Credo’s nut bags for making nut milk that doesn’t come in a plastic-lined carton. Founder Judy Lazar used her textile manufacturing knowledge (20 years experience in the industry) to create the first North American-made reusable mesh produce bag, reducing the carbon footprint of Canadians across the country. Check out her mesh grocery bag tote!
Perfect for chia pudding and overnight oats you make the night before and put in the fridge, mason jars are an all-in-one lunch container. Remember the salad-in-a-jar craze? That’s still going strong. And if you don’t eat everything in the jar, put a lid on it and put it back in the fridge.
We love beeswax wrap bags! These reusable and sustainable products were created by BeeBAGZ™ owner Kristi MacDonald, who was looking for plastic-free alternatives to keep her children’s lunches healthy. She saw a gap in this industry when she realized that beeswax wraps weren’t always a direct replacement for ziplocs and that a pouch format would be an easier and more convenient option. BeeBAGZ™ beeswax wrap bags are the sustainably-produced storage solution Kristi was looking for. As a busy parent herself, the beeswax wrap bags not only helped her prep food for weekly lunches but also helped to minimize food waste by keeping her produce, cheeses, herbs and other foods fresher, for longer periods while storing in the fridge.
Planning can be the easiest way to cut down on food waste. Let’s take a closer look!
Beeswax bags are perfect for storing leftovers like cut-up fruits and vegetables. They also work well for finger foods, like sandwiches, wraps, crackers, and cookies.
A bag format offers more versatility and convenience than a traditional beeswax wrap—which is great for preserving the freshness of larger items, like a cantaloupe or avocado you’ve cut in half. But a beeswax wrap baggie is great for smaller, more delicate items, like grapes or strawberries, that might get squashed by traditional wraps. Simply open the top of the baggie, and drop your leftovers inside. Then, fold the top flap down and apply gentle pressure to close (the warmth of your fingers makes a nice seal). Done. No worries about food falling out!
Because beeswax baggies have a natural wax coating that forms a moisture and air barrier, they are a top pick for items like cheese that are susceptible to drying out if not properly stored.
There's nothing more frustrating than stocking your refrigerator with fresh greens, only to discover that they've wilted or developed mushy spots. Our bags preserve the freshness of herbs, kale, chard, fiddleheads, and lettuce greens by keeping air, light, and moisture out. Simply wash and dry your leafy greens and herbs, trim off any soggy or wilted leaves and excess stems, and tuck them in the beeswax baggie. Then, store your bag in your refrigerator crisper drawer.
You can also use your bag to store pre-made leftover salad using this same method. Just be sure to serve the dressing on the side, and skip overly-moist ingredients if you're planning to wait a few days before serving.
Don’t overlook beeswax bags when it comes to storing other non-food leftovers. Half-used bars of soap and solid shampoo are easy to slide in and out of this water-resistant pouch, keeping the rest of your luggage safe from unwanted suds and “goo” during travel. Because your beeswax bag won't absorb odor or color, it's ideal for storing toiletries like natural deodorant, toothpaste tablets, and other earth-friendly personal care items.
Replacing plastic bags and containers with sustainable, non-toxic alternatives takes initiative and the right products. We are part of that solution along with our favourite sister companies who provide options like stainless steel, mesh, organic hemp and linen, and glass. These products combine to reduce leftover food waste and create an eco-friendly kitchen lifestyle.
We want to inspire you to change how you store and preserve leftover food.

]]>Switching to a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle does not happen overnight and usually occurs in small steps. First, you may reduce plastic consumption when shopping, then switch to plastic-free cleaning supplies, and so on.
What about the even smaller decisions like plastic snack bags? It seems like a neglectable amount of plastic to worry about but once you look at the statistics, you'll see that it's not. It is estimated that the average North American household uses over 500 zip-locked bags annually and for the most part, these bags are used only once and end up in landfills for hundreds of years to come.
Keep reading to find out 7 reasons you should ditch plastic snack bags.
All plastic is made using non-renewable crude oil, gas, and coal. As a result, more than 850 million metric tons of greenhouse emissions were released into the environment last year alone.
This is due to extracting fossil fuel, transporting, refining, manufacturing, and shipping plastic products.
Excessive greenhouse emissions (mainly carbon dioxide) cause real problems on earth. They allow radiation from the sun to come into our environment but don't allow infrared radiation to leave. This creates a greenhouse effect, causing the temperatures on our planet to rise, which becomes inhospitable for most forms of life.
The biggest contributor to greenhouse emissions is the burning of fossil fuels, which are used for many day-to-day things, including the production of plastic.
Although plastic snack bags aren't responsible for the entirety of this, they take up a fair share of it because of their popularity.
Small bags are used for convenience. They allow you to store unused food and bring snacks wherever you go.
This is why at least 1.105 billion plastic sandwich bags in the U.S. alone are consumed each week. That's an unfathomable number and only includes one country's consumption. The majority of these bags come from people who only have a handful every week, too.
The number is so high because realistically, plastic sandwich bags are single-use products.
After they've held sandwiches, chips, and snacks of all varieties, plastic snack bags often end up in the waste bin. They simply aren't made to be reused.
You can't put them in the dishwasher. Hand washing them is difficult without ripping the bag. Plus, their design tends to lock in moisture, meaning mold can grow in them.
Although plastics are made using natural resources, they can't biodegrade due to the chemical processing they've undergone.
Plastic snack bags are typically made of #2 (high-density polyethylene) or #4 (low-density polyethylene) plastic. They are technically recyclable but many plants don't take them due to the fact that they're so small that they can damage equipment.
Plus, they can't be accepted if they are torn or ripped. The sealing zipper itself isn't recyclable at all.
As a result, many plastic bags end up in landfills, or worse -- they float away into nature. They don't disappear, even after hundreds of years. They break into smaller pieces known as microplastics.
These microplastics pollute the environment, end up in animals' digestive tracts, and can even end up in our bodies. So, these single-use items end up being forever pollutants in our world.
Aside from fragmenting into microplastics, plastic snack bags harm wildlife in other ways.
When they end up in nature, animals can mistake them as food. You've probably seen the unfortunate pictures of sea turtles trying to consume plastic. This happens because plastic bags look similar to jellyfish and other aquatic lifeforms.
Even after these sad scenarios occur, the plastic snack bags don't disappear. They continue making rounds across the world until they get stuck on something and remain there until they fragment into microplastics.
Roughly 4.8 to 12.7 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, annually. There are literal islands of waste floating around, harming wildlife and releasing toxins into our waterways.
Plastic snack bags don't just hurt wildlife. They hurt us, too.
All plastics (even the ones deemed as "safe") degrade in natural light, heat, and moisture-filled environments. As a result, they leach estrogenic chemicals.
What exactly are estrogenic chemicals? They are compounds that imitate hormones like estrogen. They are proven to cause a wide variety of health problems, including reduced sperm counts, obesity, and increased rates of cancer.
In this study, 70% of the plastics used, leached these chemicals before undergoing stress degradation. This shows that even in optimal settings, plastics release harmful chemicals.
With all of these negative facts, it's important to stay positive and remember that you have power as a consumer.
Instead of using plastic snack bags, you can purchase reusable beeswax wrap bags to store your food. These products are naturally breathable and are proven to allow food to last longer than their plastic counterparts.
It seems like a small action but it isn't when you consider the fact that plastic bags never really go anywhere after they're created. They stay on earth and continue harming it.
You can do your part by making the small switch from plastic snack bags and then working towards reducing other forms of plastic in your life.
These actions can make a huge impact. Companies make their decisions based on consumer choices. This means that as the trend to go green continues, fewer companies will produce plastic-laden products.
Now that you are fully convinced about saying goodbye to plastic snack bags forever, you can make the switch to help change the world.
Keep learning about the harms of plastic so that you can be informed and make informed decisions. Then, you can encourage friends and family to do the same.

]]>Plastic pollution is a serious global issue and I am sure we’ve all seen the documentaries showing the devastating effects to our environment and to marine life. Single-use plastic from household and commercial trash ends up on shorelines and plastic waste clogs drainage systems in our cities. Some link plastic to extreme weather cycles.
A study by the World Economic Forum, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and Mckinsey, estimates that millions of tons of plastic packaging flow into the ocean at a rate of one garbage truck every minute. If we continue on this same tangent, that alarming statistic could increase to four truckloads per minute by 2050.
But how do we find a large-scale solution to a problem of this magnitude? The answer lies in bringing about change at an individual level. National Geographic featured the Baltimore Harbor cleanup, which used a contraption named Mr. Trash Wheels, a floating device that sucks up plastic from polluted harbours. John Kellett, its creator aims to “get the trash before it gets to the ocean.”
Experts believe we can make a significant impact at a global level with small changes to our buying habits. Wondering where to start? Swap plastic for eco-friendly alternatives. Consider taking the “plastic or planet” pledge to reduce single-use plastic.
Family life revolves around the kitchen, a space everyone shares. Starting your eco-friendly drive here means everyone in the family does their plastic-free part. An informal audit of your kitchen is likely to reveal a collection of plastic storage containers, plastic bags, wraps, cleaning products in plastic packaging.
Take notice of your groceries. Clear plastic produce bags are mounted on rollers at the end of each row in your nearby grocery retailer. Billions of these bags are used annually to transport fruits and vegetables home, at which point, they are disposed of and end up polluting landfills or waterways for hundreds of years. These can easily be replaced by using your own reusable produce bags instead! Retailers also have a tendency to sell produce in smaller portions, which are unnecessarily wrapped in plastic packaging. Go whole or go home! Bring your own reusable grocery bags and consider shopping at your local farmer’s market to take advantage of produce plucked fresh from the ground without plastic wrap.
Swap plastic containers with eco-friendly options like stainless steel containers or glass mason jars and containers. Find ways to upcycle your plastic containers (for arts and crafts or in the garage). Bamboo or wooden storage jars can also be a good storage option. They can be recycled, they don’t leech dangerous chemicals and they look great too! Organic bamboo, pretty ceramics and earthy clay containers give your kitchen a warm, rustic charm!
One of the most common and convenient food storage storage options for your fridge are Ziploc plastic bags, but they are also one of the worst single-use plastic offenders. Have you tried beeswax bags as an eco-friendly alternative? They are great for storing fruits and vegetables in the fridge or for sandwiches and snacks when on the go . Beeswax bags keep food fresh longer as the material is breathable and has antibacterial properties. They are made from all-natural ingredients so you won’t have to worry about plastic chemicals or toxins leaching into your family's food. In addition, you can reuse them for up to a year or longer so they are a cost efficient and sustainable alternative to plastic bags.
Beeswax wraps are also a versatile option that can be used as a replacement for Saran wrap to cover bowls of leftovers in the fridge.
Replace your non-stick cookware and microwave-friendly plastic with eco-friendly options like cast iron pans, high quality metal pots and stoneware that won’t leech toxins into your food. Organic cutting boards made from sustainable bamboo can be used in place of synthetic cutting boards that release plastic micro-fragments as you chop. Also, opt for wooden spatulas to go plastic-free all the way.
Get plastics off the dining table! Make sure dinner plates are glass or ceramic. Wooden serving bowls and platters work well for salads and starters. Use reusable cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. For kids, opt for stainless steel straws. If you must use disposable plates and cutlery, consider biodegradable bamboo options.
Most commercial cleaning products for the kitchen are laden with chemicals. Residue from these products can remain on surfaces or utensils and find its way into your food. Harsh cleaning agents generate mildly toxic fumes that can cause allergies or aggravate respiratory problems. Look for biodegradable kitchen cleaning liquids or soap bars made from natural ingredients. Sodium bicarbonate and vinegar are very effective for cleaning surfaces and greasy utensils. Add your favourite essential oil for a wonderful scent!
Home-made or commercially available bio enzymes are also good options to consider. Using bamboo brushes and scrubs made from natural fibres like coconut coir will go a long way in your plastic -free journey!
Do you regularly buy ready-to-eat-meals, milk or juice cartons, and bottled water? All of these are packed in single-use, non biodegradable material. Avoid buying these if you can. Buy milk packaged in glass bottles instead of plastic cartons. Avoid kitchen cleaners in one-time use dispensers. Buy our own sturdy, durable dispensers and use eco-friendly refill packs to reduce plastic waste.
Every piece of plastic you use and discard chokes the planet. According to an article published by ourworldindata.org, packaging as a sector is the dominant generator of plastic waste, responsible for almost half of the global total plastic waste. Every step you take toward a plastic-free kitchen contributes to a greener planet and a healthier home environment. A little care on your behalf will go a long way for the planet. Once your kitchen is plastic-free, go a step further and see if you can reduce your carbon footprint - go local, go seasonal, and try traditional.
A step back, in some cases, creates a positive forward motion. Encourage your friends to create momentum!

Its that time of year again when we search for that perfect gift, I would like to share some of my favourite eco products that I use in my household. Simple swaps that make a big impact.
The Razor Reinvented.
Back in the early ’90s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that America produced 2 billion disposable razors and blades. According to a more recent report by Statista, 163 million consumers in the U.S. used disposable razors in 2018.
Razors are usually made of several different materials, which make them a challenge to recycle properly, so we can assume that the majority of those 163 million disposable razors end up in the garbage.
As one person, you might not feel like you can make a big impact by ditching your disposable razors. However, there’s something to be said for one of our founding principles at BeeBAGZ™ and that is that every change, no matter how small, can have a big impact when adopted by many.(Margarett Mead)
I discovered leaf razor last month and it was LOVE at first shave. I bought the leaf razor and get an amazing shave with its pivoting head. Not one bit of plastic, they use metal boxes to recycle your blades. This razor offers the best shave I have ever had.
65 million empty plastic water bottles per year end up as garbage in a landfill waste site.” In some communities the percentage of water bottles that end up in landfills can be as high as 80 per cent. 4. Bottled water is definitely not safer.
Yikes, with numbers like those, choosing a reusable water bottle can make a pretty big dent in plastic pollution. My personal favourite is the brand Klean Kanteen. It can make such a big difference. They offer many choices of colours and tops and I love how long they keep my water cold or tea hot.
We all know the cycle, as soon as the holiday shopping ends, the Boxing Day sales begin. It can be hard to resist the savings. But let's get real for a second, spending an entire day battling crowds in a congested mall isn't exactly quality time. Do something with your family or friends that you'll actually enjoy and remember! Grab the toboggan, the snowshoes or skis and spend some of your time off appreciating nature! This year more than any, it's important to get outside and breathe in the fresh air.
And please stay tuned for more news from the hive! We have some exciting developments in the works! Watch our social media for news and updates from our team.
